Department of English Language and Literature
General Information
History: The Department of Western Languages and Literatures was established in 2011 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of the Higher Education Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880. With the approval of the Council of Higher Education, the department officially commenced its academic programs in the Fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year.
Batı Dilleri ve Edebiyatları Bölümü, 2880 sayılı Kanun ile değiştirilen 2547 sayılı Yükseköğretim Kanunu’nun 7/d-2 Maddesi uyarınca 2011 yılında Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi bünyesinde kurulmuştur. Yükseköğretim Kurulu’nun onayıyla bölüm, resmi olarak 2019-2020 akademik yılı Güz döneminde akademik programlarına başlamıştır.
Program Outputs:
- Advanced Language Proficiency: Graduates will attain a high level of proficiency in English, demonstrating fluency, accuracy, and sophistication in both written and spoken communication.
- In-depth Literary Knowledge: Students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of English literature, covering major literary periods, movements, genres, and influential authors from the Middle Ages to contemporary times.
- Critical and Analytical Thinking: Graduates will develop the ability to critically analyze and interpret literary texts, utilizing theoretical frameworks and literary criticism to form independent, well-supported arguments.
- Research and Scholarly Skills: Students will learn advanced research methodologies, enabling them to conduct scholarly research, engage with academic sources, and produce well-documented, original research papers.
- Cultural Awareness and Interdisciplinary Insight: The program will enhance students’ understanding of diverse cultural perspectives, fostering an appreciation of literature as a reflection of historical, social, and cultural contexts. Graduates will be equipped to make connections between literature and other disciplines such as history, philosophy, and cultural studies.
- Effective Communication Skills: Graduates will develop the ability to communicate ideas clearly, persuasively, and effectively in both academic and public settings, through presentations, discussions, and written works.
- Creative and Comparative Analysis: Students will learn to compare and contrast literary works from different periods and cultures, developing creative insights and comparative perspectives that contribute to a deeper appreciation of global literature.
- Ethical and Reflective Understanding: Graduates will demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues in literature, including representations of gender, race, and class, and will be encouraged to think reflectively about the role of literature in addressing societal issues.
- Preparation for Professional Paths: The program will prepare students for diverse career paths by fostering skills in critical thinking, communication, and research, which are applicable in education, publishing, media, translation, and other fields.
Lifelong Learning and Adaptability: Graduates will embody the principles of lifelong learning, displaying adaptability and a commitment to continuing personal and professional growth in a changing global environment. - Yaşam Boyu Öğrenme ve Uyumluluk: Mezunlar, sürekli kişisel ve mesleki gelişime olan bağlılıklarını göstererek, değişen küresel ortamda yaşam boyu öğrenme ilkelerini benimseyeceklerdir.
Language of Instruction: The medium of instruction for the program has been set at 30% English, as determined by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Students admitted to the department are provided with a one-year English preparatory course to enhance their language proficiency.
Programın öğretim dili, Yükseköğretim Kurulu (YÖK) tarafından belirlenen şekilde %30 İngilizce olarak belirlenmiştir. Bölüme kabul edilen öğrencilere dil yeterliliklerini geliştirmek amacıyla bir yıl süreli İngilizce hazırlık eğitimi verilmektedir.

Course Catalogue
Double Major/Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications.
Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.
Exchange Programs
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a designated period. Through these programs, students gain the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and acquire valuable international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi.

Objectives: The aim of the Department of English Language and Literature is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the English language and its rich literary heritage. The program is designed to develop students' analytical and critical thinking skills, enabling them to interpret and analyze literary texts across different historical periods and genres. Additionally, the program seeks to equip students with strong research and communication skills, fostering their ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively in both written and spoken forms. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the department encourages students to connect literature with other fields of study, promoting a broader cultural and intellectual awareness. Ultimately, the program aspires to prepare graduates who are capable of contributing thoughtfully and creatively to academic, cultural, and professional spheres, both within Turkey and internationally.
Current Status and Future Prospects of the Department / Program
Looking to the future, the department aims to expand its academic offerings and enhance its curriculum to keep pace with global developments in literary and cultural studies. Plans include increasing interdisciplinary courses, incorporating more digital humanities tools, and fostering partnerships with international institutions to enrich the learning experience. Additionally, the department seeks to strengthen its faculty by recruiting experts in emerging fields and creating a dynamic environment where students can develop a well-rounded perspective.
